I have to say I never used to be a fan of the old green tea. However, I started drinking it with honey and have now weaned myself off the sweetner and probably have every green tea under the sun in my tea cupboard at home (really making 'dya want a cuppa' a dangerous question).
So what makes green tea so good?
1. Recent research has shown green tea can help maintain positive mood states. Polyphenols in green tea can boost availability of dopamine. Dopamine is an important substance in the brain, crucial to creating positive mood states.
2. Green tea has been shown to disrupt plaque build-up in the brain that causes cells to die, it is thought that this could eventually lead to a cure to Alzheimer’s disease.
3. Studies show that green tea can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.
4. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of green tea can help reduce wrinkles and the early signs of aging from sun damage.
5. Tannins, found in green tea have been shown to have brain boosting benefits: they have been shown to reduce the amount of brain damage occured after strokes and other brain inuries.
6. . Green tea consumption is associated with improved dental health. The catechins in green tea can lower the risk of infections and inhibit growth of bacteria.
7. One study showed that when people exercised alongside drinking Green tea, they had enhanced metabolism and adipose tissue oxidation.
8. Another study found that green tea can boost endurance and helped the body burn fat when exercising. In one particular study 10 healthy men drank green tea and their increased energy expenditure by 4%.
9. Green tea has been linked to a reduced risk of Parkinsons disease.
10. Polyphenols in green tea, which give green tea its bitter taste, are powerful antioxidants that have been associated with preventing cancer.
